memory hierarchy
There are lots of stuff regarding RAM and ROM..............
Memory plays important role in the computers and any other systems to store data and to access data.
there are many types of memories like
- Register-Registers are the smallest and fastest type of memory, at most a few kilobytes, and usable directly by CPU instructions without first having to fetch the data.
- cache memory-which is also called CPU memory(microprocessor can access quickly than it can access regular RAM).
- virtual memory-allow a computer to compensate physical memory shortages by transferring some data from RAM to external storage units.
- magnetic tapes-oldest type of memory unit .it has floppy disks, magnetic recording tapes.
HAVE LOOK AT RAM
RAM -random access memory.data in RAM is not permanently written that is when power off in the middle then the data will be lost.it boost up the processor speed. To keep information we need to have power. In our systems,we often use use RAM for data storage.but now a days, there is lots and lots of information to be stored.therefore we use secondary memories(hard drives, flash drives)and virtual memories(ROM).RAM is also known as volatile memory.
now the question is what is volatile memory???
MOVE ON TO VOLATILE MEMORY
Volatile-which is not permanent and evaporates.RAM is also known as volatile memory, when power off,it stores nothing in the memory.RAM -volatile memory
volatile memory needs power continuously to store data.
why people are still using RAM even though it is volatile????
RAM is one of the fastest memory units. Therefore we use it.but the thing is we need to have reliable and continuous power.Although, secondary memory retains data even after power goes, but they are quite slow.so we only use them to store some sought of files.
TYPES OF RAM
classified mainly into two types
- DRAM
- SRAM
DRAM-dynamic random access memory, this stores more data in less space.it is mainly used for gaming purposes.it is also fastest memory(because it directly access to CPU).main thing is it should have power to refresh at every instance.
SRAM-static random access memory, this is also fastest memory, but ass the name indicates it is static,it does not need power continuously.it uses smaller power comparative to the DROM.it is used in cellphones.
HAVE LOOK AT ROM
ROM- read only memory,it is permanent memory and also called as non volatile memory because even after power goes,it stores data at that point of time.ROM is neither secondary memory/external memory.it is fully misconception.this memory is not directly accessed from the processor.
TYPES OF ROM
- PROM
- EPROM
- EEPROM
PROM- programmable read only memory, that can be modified once by user.,and can be written once on a chip.
EPROM-erasable programmable read only memory,it retain its contents until and unless it is exposed to ultra violet rays, these rays clears its contents and make them available for reprogramming the memory.
EEPROM-electrically erasable programmable read only memory,it uses special type of electrical charge inorder to remove the contents.
above all retains data even after no power ,these all are less faster than RAM.
REAL TIME EXAMPLE FOR RAM & ROM
- if a person is doing his document in MSword, he is typing his content on to the page, after some time power gone.it get saved until and unless he save his data.otherwise there will be lost of data.this happens because MSword will be in RAM.
- if a person has his/her data that is stored in internal storage.once we write them, they will be available foe ever.for example,a person saved his photos on to the system, they are available for future.ROM is also known as internal storage
we have mobile phones, that have RAM and ROM(internal memory).
Hope you guys love it,i think you got clear idea about RAM & ROM.
see you soon guys,if you have doubts.please let me know in the comment section.
I am ending this with a quote
The rise of Google, the rise of Facebook, the rise of Apple, I think are proof that there is a place for computer science as something that solves problems that people face every day. Eric Schmidt
